About 2,500 letters are being sent out to our Pikoiloa neighbors to inform the community about the latest HMP activities. Below is a copy of the letter and downloadable pdf:

Aloha Neighbors,

We hope this message finds you and your ‘ohana safe and well.

We are reaching out to provide an update on preconstruction activities at Hawaiian Memorial Park and to remind you of our dedicated project website: www.hmpfacts.com. This website is the primary source of up-to-date information for the community and is also linked through our Hawaiian Memorial Park Cemetery & Funeral Services Facebook page: facebook.com/HawaiianMemorialPark.

The website includes details on:

  • Preconstruction and future construction stages

  • Cultural aspects of the project

  • Protection of native habitats and species

  • Items of historical significance pertaining to Hawaiian Memorial Park

  • Other project-related updates

Our goal is to keep you fully informed as we move forward with improvements at Hawaiian Memorial Park.

Over the past five years, Hawaiian Memorial Park has worked closely with the Department of Planning and Permitting (DPP) to obtain the necessary permits. To clarify recent activity:

  • No grading is currently taking place on the property.

  • The visible changes to the land were the result of tree felling, not grading.

  • The Geotechnical Boring and visible access trails were completed under a separate grading permit issued in August 2022.

The most recent activity involved tree felling only, completed on May 31, 2025. The tree stumps and root systems remain in place; there was no ground disturbance. In compliance with environmental protections, we are not permitted to cut trees taller than 15 feet between June 1 and September 15, due to the potential presence of nesting Hawaiian hoary bats.

Current on-site activity is limited to mulching the felled trees only, which we anticipate completing by July 31, 2025.

While not required during tree felling, Best Management Practices (BMPs) were implemented voluntarily. “Compost socks” were installed at the base of the property to mitigate potential erosion, in addition to BMPs that had already been established during the initial grading in 2022.

All activities to date are classified as pre-construction. We remain in the engineering review phase with DPP, and no final grading permit has been issued yet. However, we are pleased to share that the project’s revised drainage design will result in a significant reduction in water flow to the homes located directly above the future expansion area. We are hopeful that the permit will be approved before September, though this timeline depends on DPP’s ongoing review.

Hawaiian Memorial Park and its employees have served these islands since 1958.  We are honored and humbled to be an integral part of this community as a place where we can come together to pay our respects and cherish those who came before us. This project allows us to continue providing that same standard of excellence and care Hawai‘i has come to know and trust moving forward, while also recognizing the original stewards of the land by working with Native Hawaiian groups to protect important Native Hawaiian cultural practices and historic resources.
